Influence Of Lithospheric Scale Basement Faults On Seismicity In The Himalayan Orogenic System

چکیده

The Himalayan system is the result of a continental collision that occurred approximately 55 million years ago between Indian and Asian tectonic plates1,2. resulted in underthrust crust beneath Asia, deformed crustal wedge3,4. plate records complex pre-Himalayan geological history includes several basement faults reach depths 70 kilometres are oriented at high angle to front5. These bound topographic highs interpreted limit rupture earthquakes6. Recent research suggests control distribution magnitude seismicity along Himalaya7.
serves as prototype for novel three-dimensional numerical modelling understand if how inherited structures influence orogenic settings. Models generated using Coreform Cubit meshing software run on supercomputer platform hosted University Toronto. initial model contains three blocks: crust, wedge, all cut by lithospheric scale fault. 2015 7.9 MW Gorkha earthquake simulated, slip basal detachment. Seismograms, shear wave potential, compressional potential movies created within systems. Understanding these regionally significant densely populated regions northern India Nepal utmost societal importance. References 1. Najman, Y., et al., (2010). Lithospheric scale gravitational flow: the impact of body forces on orogenic processes from Archaean to Phanerozoic

In the Archaean, the combination of warmer continental geotherm with a lighter sub-continental lithospheric mantle suggests that gravitational forces played a more significant role in continental lithospheric deformation. To test this hypothesis, we compare the evolution of the deformation and the regional state of stress in ‘Archaean-like’ and ‘Phanerozoic-like’ lithospheres submitted to the s...

Possible Basement Transverse Faults in the Western Alborz, Northern Iran

Transverse basement (TB) faults are important structures in the mountain belts or sedimentary basins influencing various aspects of them. The origin of these faults is diverse, but their effect on the shape and configuration of continental margins is characteristics. The Western Alborz range that borders the South Caspian basin to southwest is a complex range with principal faults and known ear...
